Preamble
The Caribbean Regional Midwives Association which was formed in April 2012 is a non-governmental, non-profit, regional midwifery association. It was established at the Caribbean Initiative meeting hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Midwives which was held in Trinidad & Tobago.
The countries that are members are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname & Trinidad and Tobago.
Functions of Caribbean Regional Midwives Association
The functions of the Caribbean Regional Midwives Association are to:
- Enhance the capacity and competency of qualified midwives.
- Standardize midwifery education in the region.
- Set standards for safe, proficient and effective practices.
- Monitor the standards and methods of practice.
- Set up systems of facilitate communication links between and among the regions.
- Create a database of Registered Midwives practicing within the Caribbean.
- Promote woman-centered, evidence-based midwifery practice.
- Provide opportunities for distance learning facilitated by International and Regional agencies e.g:
- The Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery: GANM
- United States Agency for International Development: USAID.
- The Pan American Health Organisation: PAHO
